#1 - Mom?

“Wake up Alli”, I heard. Rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, I started to sit up in my bed and was caught mid motion by a face I didn’t know, peering down at me. His name was Horsehair, and he fit the part. His head was wrapped in a bandana, his facial hair trimmed short into a dark brown goatee. Sunglasses covered his eyes in black reflections of my room, and his neck was as big as my thigh. He spoke:

“We’re friends of your mom and dad’s. We’re taking you to a…” he was interrupted by my mother from across my bedroom. She continued “Alli, they’re taking you to a school in Utah for kids who have problems…like you. Just get up and put your shoes on.” I could now see her in the mirror, reflected back at me, her eyes rubbed red from crying, her hands wringing slow knots.

“What?” I asked again but before I could answer, a woman approached me. She didn’t look more than 20, and she nodded at Horsehair as she came closer, as if to say “let me talk now.” He nodded back and she stepped up to me.

“If you run, we’ll handcuff you to the Jeep. You aren’t going to get away, we’re bounty hunters. Your parents are sending you away because you’ve been quite awful. We can help you” and she reached out and took my hand. I pulled away. She gasped a tiny bit, glanced at a third man walking in, Cody, and turned back to me and said, a little more crisp this time “If you run, we’ll handcuff you to the Jeep. You can do this easy, or you can make this hard on yourself.”

“Mom?” I said, starting to shake. “What’s going on? Mom?”

She ignored me. I watched her walk out of my room and as she did, I realized that I wasn’t going to school today, tomorrow…anytime soon. It was the 16th of February, 1990. I was 15.

holy cow Alli…you are full of surprises aren’t you? I have a feeling this is not going to be your typical snarky blog. I hate hearing about nice people who have fucked up experiences.
